The German Shepherd Dog, also popularly known as Alsatian (name derived from it's supposed origin from Alsace in France), is one of The Most Popular Dogs in the world. The dog has been bred for its Intelligence and Working Abilities. It is still the most popular breed used for Police & Military Work, Narcotics Detection, Search and Rescue Work, Tracking Criminals and Holding Suspects, Hazard Detection, Patrolling and Security. This is because of its Intelligence, Strength, Trainability and Obedience. In the book The Intelligence of Dogs, author Stanley Coren ranked the breed third for intelligence, behind Border Collies and Poodles.
