| The Dalmation is said to have had its origin in Dalmatia on
the Adriatic coast. But there seems to be evidence that it originated in India and was
transported to Greece by Indian Merchants of Ancient times. It has been used as a pack
hunter, a retriever and as a circus performer. Uniquely it has also been used as a
carriage dog to walk alongside horse drawn carriages clearing the road in populated areas.
In the days before motor-cars, the American Fire Dept used it to control the horses that
pulled the fire- aplliances. Today is serves as a great companion dog. Having become
immensely popular with the movie "101 Dalmations". It weighs 23-25 kgs and is
aout 50-61 cms tall. They are white in colour with the charateristic spots being in black
or liver. |
